PREMIERE: Infection in Our Healthcare System, August 27th

This Friday August 27, Media Mobilizing Project is premiering "Infection in Our Health Care System" as part of our launch of MMP TV. The event is taking place at Freedom Theatre in North Philadelphia.  The hour-length investigative report focuses on the experiences of poor and working people within a health care system that places profit over people. Spanning from Pottstown to northeast Philadelphia, the report tells the story of workers struggling for dignity and communities fighting for survival in the face of corporate and university greed. The launch of MMP TV also marks an important moment for Philadelphia's media landscape. At a time when the freedom of the Internet is in jeopardy and our mass media is increasingly consolidated offering the perspectives of the wealthy and well-connected, MMP TV is  made by, for and from the perspective of the majority poor and working class communities of Philadelphia and beyond. It tells the stories that FOX News and the Philadelphia Inquirer will not tell, giving voice to those that have long been silenced. Come celebrate the launch of Media Mobilizing Project Television:

When: Friday, August 27th, 6:30 p.m

Where: Freedom Theatre, 1346 North Broad St (At Broad St and Master St)

Watch: The city unites against fire station brownouts

See video

In the summer of 2010 the City of Philadelphia began a "rolling brownout" measure, in which local fire stations close for determined periods of time. The City put the measure in place to save approximately $3.8 million and prevent permanent closing of fire stations and layoffs of firemen and women. (In 2009, the City shut down seven fire stations.)

Since the brownouts started, there have been several fires in which the closest and most direct fire station was browned out, resulting in unnecessary loss of life.

More Classmates, Less Inmates

In the recent state budget proposal, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett proposed a cut in the education system of around $550 million (that's right, million). At the same time, the Pennsylvania prison system has not received any cuts and in fact has gotten an increase in funding (of approximately 11%).

Does it make sense to be spending more money in prisons than in the education of the youth of Pennsylvania??

Philadelphia’s two major newspapers have been acquired by outside investors.  Comcast cable dominates the market, but thousands of our neighbors can’t afford to get online.  In an era of dwindling outlets telling the stories of everyday Philadelphians, the Media Mobilizing Project has launched MMPtv, a monthly half-hour newsmagazine knitting together the stories of people across our region.  The show premiered on PhillyCam, Philadelphia’s new public access television station.

Now you can watch online.
