Community Building Dinner: Presentation on Building a Movement
To build a movement to end poverty led by the poor and working class across the color lines, we need commitment and unity. We need to be clever with our strategy and tactics. We need leaders and organizers. And we are all leaders and organizers.
Martin Luther King's Poor People's Movement was brillant except he was the only leader and organizer. He was born before his time. I love this quote by King: "We have moved from the era of civil rights to the era of human rights, an era where we are called upon to raise certain basic questions about the whole society. We must see now that evils of racism, economic exploitation and militarism are all tied together."
To build a strong movement to end poverty led by poor and working class across racial barriers, we have to identify the issues and the problems in our society. We need to know our enemies. We know our problems here in Philly.
- Rich developers and the politicians displacing our families and communities.
- Closing and nearly closing neighborhood hospitals, libraries, youth and senior centers.
- Labor issues; City workers working without contracts, etc.
- Basic mainstream media bias coverage on events and crisis.
The list goes on and on. This is why the time is Now that we must all unite and stand in solidarity. We have the numbers, and together we can accomplish this mission. We also have a moral obligation to participate in this action to end the destruction of mankind. We have to tell the world the truth. We need to face our enemies.
Everyone deserves to be loved and treated with dignity. God created love, and love does not destroy the human soul.
The time is Now - Tonight - that we must build a movement to end poverty led by the poor and working class across the color lines.
