The Death and Life of Newspapers
In the recent edition of The Nation, communications scholar Robert McChesney and journalist John Nichols discuss the future of journalism and call for government intervention to save the vital but dying craft of journalism. In the essay the authors revisit the age old argument that the press is the essential "4th estate" or 4th branch of government, acting as community watchdog for political and corporate entities. The authors argue that the solution for the American newspaper must not be tied to the notion of profit making which has been the downfall of journalism in the last period giving folks like Rupert Murdoch free reign over our public sphere. This essay brings up important points regarding the future of journalism and the role of the MMP network and other communities building their own communications and reporting infrastructure. Check it out.

importance of this article
I think one thing this article can lead us to think about is alternatives in how we produce media. We will always need a profesional journalism staff that is funded to do investigative work, but in organizing there may be other ways to support that same type of work.
