"Enough!": Philadelphians Stand Against Fire Station Brownouts
On February 22, 2011, the Taing family lost two children, Peterson and Kevin Taing, ages 9 and 7, to a fire that also destroyed their home. On that tragic day, Fire Engine 61, which has the most direct route to the family's home, was closed due to the City's Brownout policy. We know from research, that fires progress exponentially and life and death can often be a matter of seconds. On this day, because of decisions we have made as a city, Philadelphia was not optimally prepared to save the lives of these two young children. In a time when budgets are being slashed for our schools, our communities, our libraries and other key social services that keep us safe, we have decided to come together to say "enough."
Join us this Monday, May 9th as we stand in support of the Taing family, and the Local 22 Firefighter's Union, who are working to keep all fire stations open and keep us safe from tragedy as we build towards a better tomorrow. We will meet at 5PM at 134 Sparks Street, where the Taing family, community members, the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia, Media Mobilizing Project, One Love Movement, local high school student groups and Local 22 Firefighter's Union will gather in remembrance of Peterson and Kevin Taing.
