More Classmates, Less Inmates
In the recent state budget proposal, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett proposed a cut in the education system of around $550 million (that's right, million). At the same time, the Pennsylvania prison system has not received any cuts and in fact has gotten an increase in funding (of approximately 11%).
Does it make sense to be spending more money in prisons than in the education of the youth of Pennsylvania??
On March 30th, the Campaign for Nonviolent Schools (CNS) mobilized 2,000 students, workers, parents, and community members to make it very clear that this is unacceptable. CNS is a citywide coalition of ten youth leadership organizations in Philadelphia, founded and led by the Philadelphia Student Union, dedicated to addressing the root causes of school violence and its everyday manifestations. The student-led march completely blocked off traffic as it made its way to the steps of the Philadelphia School District building, where different community leaders took turns in speaking out against the attack on youth and making it very clear that not just students will be affected by it.The Campaign's vision for nonviolent schools puts forward student-centered and cost-saving solutions to improve school climate and educational quality without pushing students into the criminal justice system.
