WHERE - 2757 N. 5th Street, 2nd Floor Rear, Philadelphia, PA 19133
COST - $5.00 admission
This month, Raíces pairs up with JUNTOS to bring an exciting Tertulia to the public! JUNTOS representatives Zac Steele and Laura Deutch have been working with students at Furness High School with teacher Marynes Asencio and also with adult Mexican immigrants with the help of Media Mobilizing Project,
teaching them about media literacy and how to make documentaries that
teach the public about the their true stories of living as immigrants
in this city.
The film students will present their short
documentaries and talk about their experiences and reflections on the
film-making process. Each youth's film tells a story about the problems that affect the student's neighborhoods and life, and each adult's film communicates the lived realities and issues that affect them as immigrants in Philadelphia.
The public is invited to this Tertulia to learn about those realities,
learn about documentary making and about the organizations involved,
and speak with the film students about their documentaries and the
issues they represent.
The art exhibit features the artwork of mother-daughter duo from Venezuela: painter Susana Amundaraín and photographer Vanessa Briceño. Its name "Silent Conversations"
originates in the deep communication between mother and daughter, which
impacts who they are as individuals and as aritsts. Both Amundaraín and
Briceño have exhibited many times, but this will be their first
collaborative exhibit together.
In the tradition of the Tertulia, there will be hors d'oeuvres for guests, and an open mic
will follow the presentation. Come ready with your poetry, songs or
other art that you would like to share with Tertulia participants!
On
the last Friday of every month, the Talentos studio is converted into
Café Encuentros to host the Tertulia. This event--for people 15 years and older--is
one of Raíces' most popular programs, which presents monthly lectures
and discussions on cultural topics, and closes with an open mic
session. Please, be aware that most of the speaking is in Spanish. Raíces calls this cultural encounter in the café atmosphere "a retreat for the soul."
