The Way to Work program is a statewide initiative that has put 12,000  adults back to work in full time employment and 14,000 youth into summer employment. This program is slated to be cut off on September 30th. Many people across the state are pushing to extend this program, in hopes of lessening the unemployment crisis instead of adding to it.

Harsh disciplinary policies, such as zero tolerance, contribute to the school to prison pipeline by criminalizing students and pushing them out of school. Restorative practices, on the other hand, offer an opportunity to repair & move forward after a problem arises, keeping more students engaged in their education.

This Friday, Media Mobilizing Project is premiering "Infection in Our Health Care System" at the Freedom Theatre as part of our launch of MMP TV. The hour-length investigative report focuses on the experiences of poor and working people within a health care system that places profit over people. Spanning from Pottstown to northeast Philadelphia, the special report tells the story of workers struggling for dignity and communities fighting for survival in the face of corporate and university greed. The launch of MMP TV also marks an important moment for Philadelphia's media landscape. At a time when the freedom of the Internet is in jeopardy and our mass media is increasingly consolidated offering the perspectives of the wealthy and well-connected, MMP TV is  made by, for and from the perspective of the majority poor and working class communities of Philadelphia and beyond. It tells the stories that FOX News and the Philadelphia Inquirer will not tell, giving voice to those that have long been silenced.

During Philadelphia Student Union's summer leadership program, Building A Youth Movement, students hit the streets to ask people their opinions about public education. Along the way they talked to college students, third grade girls, adults who attended private school, a mother with young children, parents of high school students, and other Philadelphians--- all of whom had strong opinions about the state of our city's public schools. Listen and see if you agree with what these Philly residents had to say.

In the past few years, residents of Point Breeze in South Philadelphia have seen enormous growth in the construction of expensive new housing in their neighborhood.  This housing is unaffordable for most Point Breeze residents.  The median income in Point Breeze in 2008 was $26,150, but the majority of this new housing is being  priced from between $250,000 to $400,000. Even in the best circumstances most banks will not allow a borrower to take out a mortgage more than three times their income.  It is clear that this housing is not being built to meet the housing needs of of people who already live in Point Breeze.

Nearly 15 million people are unemployed across the US—and those numbers don't take into account the 1.2 million discouraged workers (workers whose unemployment benefits have run out), 8.6 million involuntary part-time workers, countless others who are underemployed, or those who are coming of age and have yet to find work.  Since the beginning of the year, the US has seen an increase of 593,000 jobs in the private sector, but that's still 7.9 million jobs fewer than there were in December 2007.

Last Spring, Philadelphia-based food service provider, Aramark, came to the table and agreed to work with the Coaltion of Immokalee Workers in their pursuit of  curing an agriculture industry that by the CIW's estimation is ill to the core.  A system of work and profit, where "the norm is a disaster, and the extreme is slavery".
