The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), a Florida grassroots farmworker organization, and allies in Philadelphia and nationwide are celebrating a successful campaign against Aramark. The multinational food service company, based in Philadelphia, is the eighth company to agree to partner with the CIW to ensure fair wages and humane working conditions for Florida tomato pickers in their supply chain. The company bowed to the pressure of a growing nationwide campaign that included successful student organizing on numerous university campuses, weekly pickets at Aramark's corporate headquarters in Philadelphia and a rally and delegation to Aramark Headquarters lead by the CIW and United Workers last December. Local allies of the CIW who contributed to this win include Media Mobilizing Project, students at Penn, St. Joe's and Temple, The United Taxi Workers Alliance, Just Harvest and Student/ Farmworker Alliance.

A key feature of any public education system is its purpose. Right now, a lot of people are putting forward the idea that the purpose of our schools is to prepare students to “compete in the global economy.” The proponents of this framework span the political spectrum, from Newt Gingrich to Barack Obama, but is it really the best thing for students?

On Wednesday, 1,500 nurses and staff in Temple University Health System (TUHS) will go on strike demanding higher quality patient care, the right to free speechreasonable health care costs, cost of living raises and tuition remission for family members attending Temple University. The gap between the nurses and TUHS is wide and a strike, potentially a prolonged strike, seems certain. While there are many issues that could be discussed regarding this strike, the most appalling is the money issue.

On Sunday, March 21, 2010 Around 1,000 people from Philadelphia and surrounding areas packed into buses and headed towards Washington D.C to join up with the 200,000 already present there for a march for  Comprehensive Immigration Reform. You may not have heard about this incredible gathering of people in the media because it was overshadowed by the few dozen protestors gathered there also against the Healthcare Reform bill that was being passed. Regardless of that, the power of the people was definitely seen and heard in Washington and throughout the country.

Because the federal health reform bill signed into law today (Tuesday, March 23)  fails to make health care truly universal and equitable, human right to health care advocates across the country are pushing their state legislatures to implement more effective and comprehensive measures at the state level. In Vermont, for example, the Vermont Workers’ Center’s Healthcare Is a Human Right Campaign has galvanized legislative action with a powerful grassroots organizing and advocacy strategy.
