Nutter's Status Quo No Victory for Philadelphians
Today's article by Ben Waxman, "Maintaining Status Quo a Victory for Nutter" begs readers to lighten up on Philadelphia's Mayor, Micheal Nutter, because he did the best he could by not laying-off police and firefighters in the face of the current 'recession'. For most people in this city, Nutter has done little to nothing to stand with them and fight for the things they need, deserve and have worked tirelessly for. Services that he did save came because of intense pressure from Philadelphians who demanded he keep vital services working. The economic situation presented in this article fails to understand the magnitude and longevity of suffering that the people of the region and across the globe have faced and will continue to encounter. Perhaps Nutter himself has missed this point. Proposal after proposal that attempts to 'balance a budget' on the backs of poor and working people rather than those who have created this most current economic disaster may be status quo, but is hardly a victory for Philadelphians.
