"Obama Escucha!, Estamos en la Lucha" March for Comprehensive Immigration Reform

On Sunday, March 21, 2010 Around 1,000 people from Philadelphia and surrounding areas packed into buses and headed towards Washington D.C to join up with the 200,000 already present there for a march for  Comprehensive Immigration Reform. You may not have heard about this incredible gathering of people in the media because it was overshadowed by the few dozen protestors gathered there also against the Healthcare Reform bill that was being passed. Regardless of that, the power of the people was definitely seen and heard in Washington and throughout the country.

There where many different communities present there, all wanting to be heard; Latinos, Blacks, Whites, Asians, Africans and European immigrants and supporters all chanting in one voice “Obama Escucha!, Estamos en la Lucha” and also the famous chant of “Si Se Puede!!”. On this day it didn’t matter if you where young or old, rich or poor, or from a different country. Everyone present there was just of one race, the Human race.

During the almost 4 hour gathering at the National Mall, many people got up and spoke to the crowd, including Congressman Luis Gutierrez, Senator Bob Menendez and the biggest speaker, even though he wasn’t there in person and instead sent a video message, President Barack Obama. President Obama gave his full support for comprehensive immigration reform and gave details of the Bipartisan Immigration Reform Bill announced by Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C).

Regardless of what happens, the main thing that we want is for families to not be split apart because of deportations and a clear path for people to become legal U.S Citizens.  All in all I would say that the march on Washington was a huge success and I'm happy to say I was present there along with my family to witness this historic gathering.
