TAKE ACTION: Jobs in Danger
Nearly 15 million people are unemployed across the US—and those numbers don't take into account the 1.2 million discouraged workers (workers whose unemployment benefits have run out), 8.6 million involuntary part-time workers, countless others who are underemployed, or those who are coming of age and have yet to find work. Since the beginning of the year, the US has seen an increase of 593,000 jobs in the private sector, but that's still 7.9 million jobs fewer than there were in December 2007.
Pennsylvania may lose thousands more jobs if Congress allows
the stimulus-funded Way to Work Program to expire. Almost 3,000 unemployed
people have been hired into the program in Philadelphia, and while it is set to
end on September 30th, there are still a great deal of unexpended
funds left to employ more people and maintain the existing jobs.
The Philadelphia Unemployment Project (PUP) is urging people
to call Senators Casey and Specter to demand that the extension of the TANF
Emergency Fund, which is funding the Way to Work Program and hundreds of
thousands of jobs nationwide, be included in a bill this week. To call:
Casey's office - 202-224-6324
Specter's office - 202-224-4254
The Senate goes out for August recess next week and will not
be back until September 13th, so it is imperative that the Senate
act on this now. Costs of living are rising and people are losing their homes
at a dramatic rate. Letting any jobs program expire now would be unconscionable.
