Watch: Stories from the Ground Zero of Natural Gas Drilling
This summer members of Labor Justice Radio, MMPTV and Philadelphia Student Union's On Blast Radio took a trip to the small town of Dimock, PA, a place that some are calling the "ground zero" of natural gas drilling.
We spoke with Norma Fiorentino and Pat Farnelli, who are among a group of residents in Dimock speaking out about the disastrous effects of the fracking method being used to access natural gas beneath their properties. Contaminated groundwater, air pollution and illness are among their major concerns. Norma and Pat both authorized drilling on their lands, but say they were not warned at all about the potential impacts on the health and safety of their families.
Tomorrow, September 28th at 10AM in City Hall, Philadelphia City Council is holding its first public hearing on the economic and environmental impacts of natural gas drilling in the region. The Delaware River watershed, which supplies Philadelphia's drinking water, is currently being threatened by the same method of gas drilling which, for the last few years, has been posing alarming health and safety risks to residents of Dimock.
