Luis Muñoz Marín is the last remaining public schools in it’s North Philadelphia neighborhood. Neighboring schools have either closed entirely or have been turned over to ASPIRA Charter Schools.
On April 1, the District announced that it had targeted Marín and another elementary school, Steel Elementary, for charter conversion. Parents had one month before they would vote to determine whether their school remained a traditional neighborhood public school or whether it would be turned over to private charter operators.
Many parents are decrying a lack of transparency in the process put forward by the School District of Philadelphia, saying it has been unfair, rushed and divisive. Others recognize that their schools are in need of transformation, but raise concerns as to why they were not entitled to remain within the District to conduct transformations plans led by parents, teachers, students and administration long invested in their neighborhoods.
